Kai Sotto joins Mighty Sports for Dubai campaign

Filipinos will get to see how much Kai Sotto has vastly improved in his game.

Mighty Sports has announced that the 17-year-old, 7-foot-2 big man will join them in the upcoming 2020 Dubai International Basketball Championship.

And for head coach Charles Tiu, Sotto’s addition is “literally huge”.

“Kai is huge — literally. I’ve seen his progress and his improvement, and he gives us the presence of a local big guy,” said Mighty Sports head coach Charles Tiu.

“I think this will also be a good test for him to personally see how far he’s gone, playing against imports and guys who are older than him.”

Sotto has been spending the past year in the States to train. He is currently ranked by ESPN as a four-star recruit in the class of 2020 — 76th overall among all recruits, 11th in the big man department.

The second generation is enrolled in Atlanta-based training ground The Skill Factory. He is also being hotly-recruited by top colleges, including University of Kentucky, Georgia Tech, and DePaul.

Sotto joins Juan and Javi Gomez de Liaño in the squad backed by Creative Pacific of Bong Cuevas, Go for Gold, Oriental Group, Discovery Primea, and Gatorade.

Other teams that have been announced that will take part in this tourney are Libya’s Al Ahli, Syria’s Alwathba Sports Club, the UAE Men’s National Basketball Team, and UAE’s Alittihad Alexandria Club.

The tourney will take place from January 23-February 1, 2020.

Last year, Mighty Sports finished in third place.
