Mike Phillips is leading the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Men’s Basketball Most Valuable Player race after the first round.
The 6-foot-8 Filipino-American big man, a two-time Mythical Team member, tops all student-athletes with 84.429 statistical points, finishing the opening round with averages of 13.29 points, 15.71 rebounds, 3.57 assists, and 1.29 steals, guiding La Salle to a 4-3 record.
Close behind is Collins Akowe with 84.286 SPs, posting averages of 16.29 points, 15.29 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 1.29 assists, and 1.0 steals while leading University of Santo Tomas to a 5-2 record.
Although the Nigerian big man is not eligible for the MVP award, if he leads the statistics, he will be recognized with the Best Foreign Student-Athlete award.
He also leads all rookies for the season.
Far Eastern University sophomore Janrey Pasaol ranks third with 80.429 SPs, averaging 18.29 points, 6.57 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.14 steals while helping the Tamaraws to two wins.
University of the East’s Precious Momowei is fourth with 80.0 SPs, though only one FSA can be included in the Elite Team.
Jake Figueroa of National University sits fifth with 77.429 SPs, posting 15.43 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.14 assists, 2.14 steals, and 1.14 blocks per game, helping the Bulldogs to a 6-1 record.
Rounding out the Elite Team, if the round had ended last Sunday, is UST’s Nic Cabanero, who accumulated 76.571 SPs with averages of 19.43 points, 6.29 rebounds, 2.29 assists, and 1.71 steals.
FEU’s Mo Konateh (74.429), Ateneo’s Kymani Ladi (67.571) and Dom Escobar (64.0), and UST’s Forthsky Padrigao (63.667) complete the top 10.
