Mike Phillips capped off his illustrious UAAP career as a two-time champion and Finals Most Valuable Player.
The graduating big man averaged 13.3 points and 13.7 rebounds across the three-game Finals series, consistently making his presence felt despite being limited on the offensive end in the first two games.
Phillips delivered his finest performance in the deciding Game 3, pouring in 25 points and hauling down 18 rebounds to lead the Green Archers to an 80-72 victory and the championship on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
True to his UAAP trademark, Phillips credited the one who gave him strength throughout La Salle’s challenging season.
“I just want to say one thing: Jesus Christ is the real champion, He is the real MVP,” said Phillips.
“Jesus brought us to rock bottom so He could show us that He is the rock. Jesus Christ is the one who saved us.”
The Green Archers stumbled to a 2-3 start as injuries and suspensions took their toll, barely making it to the Final Four as the fourth seed with an 8-6 record after the elimination round.
But they never stopped believing.
Facing the daunting task of defeating top-ranked National University twice, La Salle rose to the occasion and did just that, earning a championship showdown against its modern-day rival, UP.
Phillips not only delivered on the court but also kept the Green Archers united throughout the rollercoaster season as co-captain alongside Earl Abadam.
And the perfect ending belonged to Phillips and the Green Archers.
Mike Phillips did that.
