Matthew Rubico returns home, rejoins LPU for NCAA comeback

Matthew Rubico is coming home.

The 5-foot-11 point guard is returning to where it all began, transferring to Lyceum of the Philippines University to resume his collegiate career.

The floor general from Lipa, Batangas made it official on Monday, formally committing to Pirates head coach Gilbert Malabanan and assistant to the athletics director Dr. Allan Layco.

“I’m happy and excited to welcome Matthew back home to the LPU Pirates,” said Malabanan. “He started his journey with us in the juniors division, and after gaining valuable experience at La Salle, he’s chosen to return and continue his college career where it all began.”

Rubico made waves during his Grade 12 year in NCAA Season 98, averaging 21.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, 7.1 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.

He led the statistical points race, but because the Junior Pirates failed to reach the Final Four, he was ruled ineligible for the MVP award.

After sitting out UAAP Season 86, Rubico suited up for La Salle in Season 87, appearing in 10 games and logging valuable minutes in the UAAP men’s basketball finals.

Following his departure from La Salle two months ago, several NCAA schools pursued Rubico.

But in the end, his heart led him back to Intramuros.

Now, he returns to LPU with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to take on a leadership role with the Pirates.

“It means a lot to us that he still sees LPU as his home. We’re looking forward to helping him grow even more as part of our program,” added Malabanan.
