Mark Torcaso unfazed by Korea’s firepower ahead of Asian Cup clash

South Korea is bracing for a sterner test. The Filipinas are preparing for their biggest challenge yet.

When the two sides collide in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup at Cbus Super Stadium on Thursday, it won’t just be about points — it will be about statements.

After contrasting results in their opening matches, the Filipinas and the Taeguk Ladies meet at 11 a.m. (Manila time) on Thursday in a crucial Group A showdown, with momentum and pride hanging in the balance.

Filipinas head coach Mark Torcaso understands the magnitude of the task ahead.

“South Korea is probably the strongest team in the competition. We’re looking forward to the challenge,” said Torcaso on Wednesday during the pre-match press conference, in a campaign supported by the Philippine Football Federation and the Philippine Sports Commission.

South Korea enters the match riding high after a commanding 3-0 victory over Iran on Monday — a result that placed them level atop Group A with the Australia women’s national soccer team, more popularly known as the Matildas.

The Australians, now under coach Joe Montemurro, are set to face winless Iran at 7 p.m. (Manila time) as they aim for a second straight win to solidify their hold on the group lead.

Meanwhile, South Korea head coach Shin Sangwoo assured that his squad is locked in, even as the Filipinas look to bounce back from a narrow 0-1 defeat to the Matildas last Sunday.

“The players have been training for a very tough match. I think our players have adjusted to the field,” said Shin.

The Taeguk Ladies boast a formidable mix of experience and quality, bannered by longtime stalwarts Ji So-yun (171 caps) and Kim Hye-ri (137 caps). Their tactical discipline was on full display in their opener, where they controlled 79 percent of possession against Iran.

Torcaso, however, remains unfazed.

“We had a tough game against the host team in the first round. However, our focus is now on playing South Korea. We’ll be facing probably one of the best and strongest teams in the competition,” he added.

History favors the Koreans — they have won five meetings against the Filipinas since 2018. But Thursday presents a new chapter, and the Filipinas are determined to prove they belong on the same stage.
