The F2 Logistics Cargo Movers have been unbeatable in the 2017 Chooks-to-Go Grand Prix thanks, no less, to the tremendous all-around play of Venezuelan import Maria Jose Perez.
As the team has lost just one set in their first six matches, Perez provided impact unlike any other import in the league. The 6-foot-2 spiker moves with the same grace when she swoops in for digs as she does when she unfurls for powerful hits.
Perez has incredible pedigree, having played in the 2008 Beijing Olympics for the Venezuelan National Team as a 17-year old. She also has experience in the fast-paced, Asian style of play with a stint in the Indonesian Volleyball League.
Still, the Cargo Movers’ leading scorer insists that her great play is a direct result of the warm and open reception she receives from the team.
“We have a really good connection inside and really good communication. It makes it easier for us because we have experienced local players and imports inside the court,” said the 29-year-old winger.
“I try to adapt to everything and try to help the girls a little bit. I try to always listen to coach.”
F2 Logistics head coach Ramil De Jesus gushes about Perez’s attitude. In a conference that is ultimately decided by the play of the imports, De Jesus is proud to have a listener as a reinforcement.
“Wala akong masasabi about sa attitude niya, very coachable talaga,” the 10-time UAAP champion mentor bared. “Talagang nag-eeffort siya makinig sa mga teammates niya pati sa aming mga coaches.
“Hopefully, magtuloy-tuloy lang ‘yung ganitong relationship niya sa amin.”
With two games left in the elimination round, Perez refuses to give off any sign of confidence as they head into the knockout quarterfinals.
“I think Petron was a really good team. For sure, Foton will be another really good opponent so we’ll see.”
