BATANGAS — Malaysia lived up to its lofty billing by downing Brunei, 7-2, to boost its final bid in polo’s 0-2 goals division of the 30th SEA Games, Friday at the Miguel Romero Polo Field in Calatagan.
Malaysia will go for a three-game sweep of the four-nation tournament with a win over Indonesia on Sunday.
The Malaysians, bidding for a rare double after winning the 4-6 goals division gold medal on Sunday, beat the Filipinos, 6-5.5 on Thursday.
The Filipinos never recovered from that controversial defeat, suffering a 9-4.5 loss to the Indonesians that all but ended their gold medal aspirations.
The Philippines was poised to score an upset over the Malaysians the other day when the Nationals took a 5.5-5 lead.
But to their horror, the referee awarded the Malaysians a penalty shot in the final 60 seconds.
“That call changed everything,” said a member of the PH team.
