Malacañang is offering its unwavering support for the country’s co-hosting of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
An announcement was made on Wednesday afternoon, stating that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has ordered the suspension of classes in public schools at all levels and government work in both Metro Manila and Bulacan on August 25 for the opening ceremonies of the global basketball event, which will take place at the Philippine Arena in Santa Maria.
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin signed Memorandum Circular No. 27 on Tuesday.
According to the memorandum, this decision was taken to “extend full support and assistance to the Philippines Sports Commission in ensuring the safe, orderly, and successful conduct of the opening ceremonies” of the World Cup.
Nevertheless, the memorandum also clarifies that agencies responsible for providing basic and health services, disaster and calamity preparedness/response, and other vital services will not be affected by the work suspension.
Conversely, the suspension of work and classes for private companies and schools will be left to their discretion.
SBP President Al Panlilio disclosed yesterday that Marcos Jr. has agreed to perform the ceremonial toss at the Philippine Arena.
