Lyceum left disappointed by Shawn Umali’s antics

Lyceum of the Philippines University has plenty of reasons to be satisfied with the Pirates’ performance in the NCAA Season 99 Seniors Basketball Tournament.

After a hard-fought 67-62 victory over San Beda University, the Pirates now stand at 6-0 for the season, firmly in control of first place in the standings.

However, a blemish on their achievement was Shawn Umali’s conduct.

Despite an impressive game with a statline of nine points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks, Umali left a sour taste in the Pirates’ mouths.

With only three seconds remaining and Lyceum’s victory almost certain, Umali taunted the San Beda crowd from the free throw line.

San Beda’s Damie Cuntapay took offense to Umali’s actions, resulting in both players receiving technical fouls.

Umali was ejected from the game, and his availability for their next matchup is uncertain.NCAA-99-AU-vs.-LPU-2 Lyceum left disappointed by Shawn Umali's antics Basketball LPU NCAA News - philippine sports news

Valdez emphasized that despite the incident, they still support Umali and will help him mature both on and off the court.

Pirates head coach Gilbert Malabanan also took responsibility, saying, “Actually, kagaya ng sinabi ko sa interview, sometimes as a head coach hindi mo rin kontrolado yung gagawin ng mga players mo eh.

“Pero sabi ko nga, give all the blame to me. Kung anuman ginawa niyang act sa loob ng court, I am going to take the blame as a head coach.”

The Pirates are set to face Emilio Aguinaldo College next on Wednesday, and it remains uncertain whether Umali will suit up for the team.
