Before delving deeper into the finer points of her PSL debut, everyone should take note that she was used sparingly during the latter parts, championship round included, of the recently concluded UAAP Season 77 Volleyball tournament.
Given that situation, one would think that the former UAAP Season 73 Rookie of the Year and UAAP Season 75 Best Blocker in the Juniors Division has finally met her ceiling.
Although given her coach’s penchant for developing their players and using them at the right time, that was certainly not the case, and Dy proved it outright with a heads-up performance.
“Nagpractice naman kami at pinaghandaan namin po ang game,” Dy shared. “Di ko naman kasi iniisip kung ilang points ang ginagawa, basta play your game and you work hard for it.”
Also, Dy’s performance also delighted her coach since she met the expectations placed on her prior to the season.
“Iyon naman ang pwede mong expect sa kanya,” said Shopinas Head Coach Ramil De Jesus. “Ang blocking niya at definitely mga attack din so ang talagang inexpect ko sa kanya nakita ko ngayon.”
Furthermore, with this Shopinas team consisting mostly of De Jesus’ former La Salle players, Dy shared that she will make most of this opportunity to make herself better and learn new things along the way. Currently, Shopinas houses former DLSU players with the likes of Cha Cruz, Stephanie Mercado, Wensh Tiu and Rochelle Sison.
Lastly, Dy also hopes that she and her newer teammates can help fill the void left by Abigail Maraño, Michele Gumabao and Melissa Gohing by going out of their comfort zones and by pushing themselves beyond their limits.
“Lahat naman gusto magchampion [sa PSL] ‘di ba? Siyempre we’re going to push ourselves and we’re new lang at hindi kami matagal magkasama,” she ended.
The next game for Shopinas will be against the Philips Gold Lady Slammers this coming Sunday, 2:30 pm, at the San Juan Arena.
