Kevin Quiambao has announced his decision to stay with De La Salle University for his junior year despite a flurry of enticing offers from overseas leagues.
Quiambao had previously assured the Green Archers of his commitment for UAAP Season 87 immediately after clinching last season’s crown.
Afterwards, though, he found himself amidst a storm of interest from top-flight clubs.
Offers poured in not only from the B.League and the Korean Basketball League (KBL) but also from clubs in the Middle East.
Over the past three months, Quiambao was approached by one team from Korea, three from Japan, and two from the Middle East.
The attention was admittedly overwhelming for the 22-year-old standout.
“Nakaka-overwhelm talaga kaya gulong-gulo ako nun,” Quiambao revealed in an interview with Tiebreaker Times.
“Siyempre, sinasabi ko naman kay Coach Topex (Robinson) lahat ‘yan pero sinasabi niya nasa sa akin pa rin ‘yung desisyon – kung ano sa tingin ko ang makakabuti sa akin at sa pamilya ko.”
The peak of interest came following Quiambao’s impressive performances with Gilas Pilipinas and Strong Group.
Averaging 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists during the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers’ first window, Quiambao showcased his prowess on the international stage.
His stellar play continued during the Athletics’ campaign in the Dubai International Basketball Championship, where he averaged 18.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists.
However, Quiambao remained steadfast in his commitment to De La Salle University.
“Kahit maganda ‘yung mga sinabi nila sa akin, nag-promise ako sa La Salle at tutuparin ko ‘yun,” he affirmed, reiterating his decision to return for UAAP Season 87.
Addressing his absence from La Salle’s lineup in the PBA D-League, Quiambao explained that his focus was on catching up with his studies.
With much of the previous semester spent abroad due to national team duties, he is determined to make the most of his time on the court during the upcoming Filoil tournament.
Looking ahead, Quiambao has set his sights on championship glory with De La Salle and aims to contribute to Gilas Pilipinas’ quest for Olympic qualification under Tim Cone’s guidance.
As part of the Gilas pool competing in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Latvia, Quiambao is determined to help the team reach the ultimate goal of securing a spot in the Paris Olympics.
“Gusto ko ma-keep yung crown sa La Salle. Tapos sa Gilas, talagang sisikapin namin na maka-Olympics. ‘Yan yung order sa amin ni Coach Tim (Cone) – na umabot sa Paris,” he said.
