Another overseas league has opened its doors to tapping Filipinos as imports.
The Korean Basketball League has decided on Monday that it has expanded its Asian Quota Players program to Filipinos.
Initially, the KBL only had a working agreement with Japan’s B.League.
In a report by Jumpball, the KBL has laid out the rules for its Asian Quota system.
The league will be more relaxed than the B.League’s as it will only require two things.
First is that the Filipino player must have a Philippine passport and that both of his parents must still have either Philippine citizenship or a Filipino passport.
Secondly, the player must also have played in a Philippine-based league.
Naturalized Filipinos though are not allowed to be tapped as Asian imports.
Unlike the B.League, the KBL has been in close coordination with the PBA regarding this new opportunity for Filipino basketball players.
The PBA acknowledged on Monday that it has received an email from its Korean counterparts regarding this matter.
In the KBL — a league that set its salary cap for its 2022-23 season at P110,107,054.10, Filipinos can sign a deal that will range from one year to five years.
The KBL season will begin on October 15.
