A foreign agent who requested anonymity revealed that Filipino basketball prodigy Kai Sotto has been on the radar of some ball clubs abroad, who are looking to bring in the 7-foot-1 center and develop him as good as they can.
However, that agent – who has visited the Philippines plenty of times – did not disclose which clubs in particular are interested in the Ateneo Blue Eaglets star, but mentioned that those clubs have given “aggressive” offers.
“Sotto has offers in Europe
“We have been in contact with teams from the Euroleague to Spain, across Europe, but at this point, I’m not at liberty to comment on which clubs. It’s up to their camp and their advisers,” he unveiled.
The agent said that the interest in Sotto has been around for months now, and he even flew to Argentina last July for the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup to watch the second-generation star play for Batang Gilas Pilipinas.
In that global showpiece where the young Filipinos finished 13th, Sotto averaged 16.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game.
“I went to Argentina to see Batang Gilas play because there was clubs in Spain and clubs in USA that ask me about Kai Sotto so I want to see for myself. And when I saw him, he was good as advertised,” said the agent.
This opportunity comes after former Gilas head coach Tab Baldwin gave his two cents about Sotto’s future in the podcast Staying Major by Eric Menk last August where he said that the 16-year-old is better off in Europe for growth.
“I’d like to see him be kept here, but kept here under a very strict training regime which is bringing in outside influences and teaching him the game with European coaches, some American coaches,” said the American-Kiwi coach.
“All of that is good. I’d like to see him stay. But if did end up going outside, I’d like to see him go to Europe if that were the option.”
Still, the agent reiterated that it’s all up to Sotto’s camp now on which step will they take next.
“Kai Sotto, at this point, has really any option he wants. It’s all about the fit. It’s about choosing the club that he’s going to be able to develop him and be able to accommodate his needs at this point, and what he can contribute to them,” the agent pointed out.
“From the USA, to Europe, to every team, He’s a guy that can make an impact. He’s a real talent.”
