Jeson Patrombon dominated both his matches of the day, Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Play was postponed after Typhoon Tisoy brought rains into the center, but with the sun shining, it was all systems go for the matches to continue.
Patrombon moved into the semifinals of the men’s singles after dominating Mohd Adam Das Shamirul Shahril of Malaysia, 6-1, 6-1. Earlier, the visitor knocked off second-seed Thailand’s Wishaya Trongchareonchaikul in the opening round in a stunner, but could not pull off another against the Filipino.
The 25-year-old then closed out the day after a similar 6-1, 6-1 in the men’s doubles with Francis Alcantara. The Filipino duo crushed Patricio Ferreira and Antonio Mendes of Timor Leste to move into the next round.
AJ Lim joined Patrombon into the next round of the men’s singles after another thrilling win. The former University of the East Red Warrior took down the remaining Thai in the draw in Kasdit Samrej, as the latter was forced to retire due to cramps.
Lim won the first on tiebreak, then Samrej leveled the match at 7-5 in the following set.
Denise Dy and Khim Iglupas prevented a shutout on the women’s side after taking the 7-5, 6-2 win over Malaysia’s Sara Nayar and Theiviya Rajoo to move into the quarterfinals.
Shaira Rivera and Marian Capadocia were not as fortunate, though. They lost a heartbreaker against Vietnam’s Phan Thi Thanh Binh and Tran Thuy Thanh Truc, 6-2, 3-6, 8-10.
