There was plenty of hype surrounding Janti Miller as the San Beda community eagerly awaited his NCAA debut.
And he delivered.
In his very first game in the Grand Old League, the 6-foot-4 guard from Fairfield, California poured in 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and grabbed six rebounds in just 23 minutes of action.
More importantly, he, alongside Bryan Sajonia, spearheaded the Red Lions’ 96-85 demolition of the College of Saint Benilde Blazers.
“We were on the court, but we weren’t on the court, so it was like, just a blessing to come out here, especially against Benilde,” said the 21-year-old guard, who transferred from Casper College two years ago.
Miller admitted that he had been battling injuries during their preseason buildup.
Still not at 100 percent, Miller expressed gratitude toward Yuri Escueta and Andrei Santos for helping him not only regain his health but also prepare for the NCAA.
He repaid their trust by helping San Beda get revenge on the very same team that ended their title defense last season.
“I asked Coach Yuri and I asked Coach Andrei what it’s like to play against a crowd, especially ‘cause they beat us last year. It’s going to be a rivalry game, really competitive, really aggressive,” Miller added.
“They just told me to stay composed and get ready for the game, and that’s how it is.”
Despite his impressive debut, Miller knows he can still improve as the season progresses.
“I’m not gonna lie, it’s a 5 for me. I don’t like how I played, but I’m glad we got the win,” he opined.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s matchup against archrival Letran, Miller is eager to showcase more of his skills.
“I actually never played against them. This game will be my first, and what better way to do it in front of a crowd and that it counts? I’m excited.”
