When National University faced a young Sta. Rosa squad in the 2022 Spikers Turf Open Conference last September 10, there was one Lion who caught the fancy of Bulldogs head coach Dante Alinsunurin.
“Siguro pinaka impressed ako dun sa Disquitado,” said Alinsunurin after their three-set win over Sta. Rosa back then. “Kinailangan namin siya i-check palagi.
“Bagay siguro sa kanya yung jersey ng NU.”
Eight months later, the decorated head coach got his wish.
Disquitado has committed to enrolling at NU. Yes, the rich just got richer.
For the product of Edu Lirio’s volleyball program, it was his dream growing up to go to NU.
“High school pa lang talaga ako, dream school ko na po yung NU,” he told Tiebreaker Times.
“Nung nagtext sila sa akin na gusto nila ako kunin, hindi na ako nagdalawang isip ko.”
The 5-foot-11 spiker rose to prominence during his two conference stints in the Spikers’ Turf.
After being part of Sta. Rosa, Disquitado joined new club D’Navigators Iloilo in the second conference.
It was in Iloilo where he blossomed.
Disquitado led Iloilo to the semis while earning himself the Best Outside Spiker award after a league-leading 293 points on 270 attacks, 12 blocks, and 11 service aces total.
He was also the youngest member called up to the Philippine Men’s National Volleyball Team to the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.
Of course, joining the Bulldogs bring a whole new world of pressure on his young shoulders.
“Sobrang pressure dahil galing sila sa champion, gusto namin ituloy yun. Pagpumasok ako dun, hindi puwede mag-relax. Mahirap na sundan yung three-peat kaya malaking pressure yun para sa kin,” said Disquitado, citing the need to improve on his passing during the off-season.
If there’s one wish Disquitado has, he is hoping to play alongside fellow Lirio product Joshua Retamar.
“Sana makasama ko si Kuya Owa.”
