Irish Magno made quick work of Hong Kong’s Winnie Au, scoring a second round technical knockout win to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2020 Asia and Oceania Olympic Boxing Qualifiers, Saturday at the Prince Hamzeh Hall, Sport City in Amman, Jordan.
Sensing blood after the first round, Magno — who won silver in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games — went for the kill in the next stanza.
The 28-year-old did not stop unleashing multiple combinations on the Hong Konger, knocking her down. Though Au beat the count, she could not repeat after a quick left-right combination by Magno that resulted in the stoppage.
“I didn’t expect that it will be this fast,” shared Magno.
There are six Olympic spots allocated in the women’s flyweight division.
In order to punch her ticket to Tokyo, Magno has to go through six-time world champion and 2012 Olympics bronze medalist Mary Kom of India. Kom defeated Kiwi Tasmyn Benny via a unanimous decision later in the day.
“I won’t be comfortable because I need to prepare for the next fight,” vowed Magno.
