Greg Slaughter’s workouts prior to the start of the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup have seemingly bore fruit Sunday.
In their dominant 102-83 win over the Alaska Aces, the seven-foot slotman was impactful, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks as he was also a plus-19 in nearly 27 minutes.
“Greg is such in shape. He’s two years removed from his ACL injury. He’s got himself into good shape,” lauded head coach Tim Cone. “He’s moving up and down the floor.
“You saw him get down in transition and get that dunk. That was something he couldn’t do a couple of conferences ago,” added Cone, referring to Slaughter’s one-handed slam with 3:15 left to play.
“He’s actually playing really quick out there. A seven-footer that plays quick, that’s a real weapon.”
Slaughter has visibly become much slimmer than before. For him, that means a lot as it enables him to move much better on the court, so he just plans to keep on working even more.
“Definitely feel better. I just got to get used to my new weight and build better habits with it and just keep listening to my coaches and follow their guidance,” said Slaughter, who’s lost 35 lbs.
But as impressive as he had been in their conference debut, Slaughter is more satisfied with the victory.
“Personally, I’m just happy if we get the win. I’ve never been the individual stats type. Just as long as we win, I’m happy. I always play to win. With the result tonight, I’m pretty happy,” he said.
“It was good for us.”
