Gilas Youth standout Kai Oani commits to Ateneo

Ateneo de Manila University has scored a major coup for the upcoming UAAP Season 87 Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Gilas Youth standout Kai Oani has announced her commitment to Ateneo. The 18-year-old guard from St. Joseph signed her letter of commitment last Thursday (Manila time).

“We’re thrilled that Kai chose to join us. Her potential is immense, and we anticipate her making an immediate impact for our team,” said Blue Eagles head coach LA Mumar.

“With confidence, we believe she’ll step into the significant role left by Jhaz (Joson) and excel in the years ahead.”

Choosing Ateneo presented the best opportunity for her, she said.

“I was sticking to my roots and searching for the best opportunity out there,” Oani told Santa Maria Times.

“I talked to a school in Arkansas, and I talked to some other schools in the Philippines too. I’ve been to the Philippines. The coach at Ateneo (LA Mumar) just sold me on the culture the team is building,” she continued.

“Ateneo plays at a level that’s comparable to the Division 1 level in the States.”

During her senior year at St. Joseph’s, Oani averaged 14.9 points and 3.3 assists per game.
