Gilas Women drop to FIBA 3×3 WS Wuhan QF after tough loss to China

Gilas Pilipinas Women bowed to China at the close of the pool phase of the 2024 FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series – Wuhan Stop, losing 21-13, for a 1-2 record on Saturday at Hubei Province Olympic Sports Center in China.

In a crucial game against the host to close out pool play, China’s Wan Jiyuan proved to be too much for the Filipinas.

Wan scored 13 points, helping China break away from a tight 12-9 lead before taking a 20-13 cushion with 2:10 left.

Chen Mingleng fired the kill shot seconds later to complete a pool sweep and gain an outright semis berth.

Meanwhile, Gilas finished pool play in third place and will face the second-ranked team in Pool B in the knockout play-in.

The Philippines fell to Thailand earlier in the day, 18-12, before bouncing back with a 20-18 victory over Chinese Taipei.

Kaye Pingol and Angel Surada’s efforts were not enough in the opening game.

Surada, who replaced Allana Lim in the lineup, scored five of her nine total points for the day against Thailand.

Hazel Yam then took charge against the Taiwanese.

With Gilas down 18-16, Yam scored three straight points to gain the lead before Pingol finished things off with 46 seconds remaining.

Thailand finished in second place in the pool with a 2-1 slate.
