Generika-Ayala bursts to 5th straight win, avenges first round loss to Cignal HD

The Generika-Ayala Lifesavers continued their hot streak in the 2018 Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference, outlasting the Cignal HD Spikers, 25-21, 27-25, 22-25, 25-16, at the Bacoor Strike Gym.

Generika used their signature unrelenting floor defense coupled with steady blocking to stifle Cignal’s offense in key moments.

The Lifesavers were notably behind 18-22 in the second set before mounting a comeback and forcing a deuce. Thriving in the late long rallies, Generika-Ayala pulled crucial hits from Ria Meneses and Patty Orendain to end the set. After dropping the third set, the Lifesavers dominated the fourth frame, racing to a 22-12 lead.

“At least lumabas naman na ‘yung pinag-aralan namin kagabi; naba-block namin si (Mylene) Paat at (Rachel) Daquis. Sabi ko sa kanila ‘yun talaga ang kailangan namin gawin para manalo,” said Generika-Ayala assistant coach Parley Tupas who sat in for head coach Sherwin Meneses. Meneses was still in Indonesia attending an FIVB coaching clinic.

“Siguro mas mataas na ‘yung kumpiyansa namin. Pero, step-by-step lang kami. ‘Wag lang masyadong tumaas ‘yung kumpiyansa,” Tupas added.

Patty Orendain topped the Lifesavers with 18 points while Meneses added 16 markers.

Generika-Ayala (5-3) faces Cocolife (1-8) on Thursday at the same venue.

Paat managed 17 points for Cignal while Daquis and Royse Tubino added 13 markers each.

Cignal HD (4-4) takes on Smart (3-5) also on Thursday.
