Frank Muescan praises Jam Rey Mariveles’ growth: ‘He’s reforming’

Birthdays are typically a time for rest and celebration, but for Jam Rey Mariveles, his special day was spent on the pitch.

He celebrated his 23rd birthday in a match against Adamson University in the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Men’s Football Tournament last Sunday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.

Mariveles not only helped University of the East secure its second win of the season, but he also scored a brace – adding a sweet touch to an already memorable weekend.

His efforts played a key role in pushing the Red Warriors back into the win column.

The Business Education major was humble about his performance, emphasizing that the victory wasn’t just about his individual contributions, but a collective team effort.

“Di ko akalain makukuha namin yung game na ‘to,” Mariveles said.

“Nagtitiwala lang ako sa taas, kay Coach Frank (Muescan), at sa mga teammates ko para manalo.”

Muescan, who has closely observed Mariveles’ growth since joining UE, was quick to commend the 23-year-old for his progress and contribution to the team.

“I’ve been observing him since I first started sa UE – nagre-reform siya. I know this guy has talent, but dahil sa kultura, nagbabago. Sabi ko sa kanya, he has potential, and that potential is contributing to the team.”

Muescan also shared his broader vision for the team:

“So, this is a big boost for us. I told the boys, if we lost to Adamson, it would be a different story because people are hoping we can make it to the top four. We made a statement today that we are really pushing to be in the top four.”

As the first round of matches in the UAAP Men’s Football Tournament nears its conclusion, every team is vying for a coveted spot in the Final Four.

But for Mariveles, his goal goes beyond just making the cut – he wants to bring the championship back to Recto.

“Maganda sa feeling [manalo]. Since last 2002 nag-champion ang UE, ibabalik namin ‘to.”

UE’s last football title came in Season 65 under the late coach Lloyd Lim. With the team’s steady improvement this season, UE is aiming for a strong first-round finish.

After ending in sixth place last year, Mariveles reflected on the changes the team had to make to be recognized as legitimate contenders.

“Organized na ngayon, team na talaga kami. Di na kami nag-iisa-isa, buo na kami lahat. Lalo pa namin gagalingan sa mga next games.”
