Filoil: Winston shows no rust as La Salle cruises past UST

With the returning Deschon Winston leading the way, De La Salle University coasted through University of Santo Tomas, taking an 86-65 rout to remain unblemished in Group B of the 2022 Filoil Ecooil Preseason Cup, Thursday in San Juan City.

Leading by just three, 34-31, with 2:31 remaining in the second period, DLSU blasted a 9-0 run to end the half 42-31 with Schonny Winston, Francis Escandor and Evan Nelle taking charge.

The lead ballooned to 21, 84-63, with a Kevin Quiambao floater with 2:13 left in the game, virtually sealing the game for La Salle.

“Well, I think we’re right on schedule. We just have to correct things na we we’re making mistakes, with the mistakes naming ginagawa. We have a brutal schedule for this week no? Siguro that’s the thing we have to pay for, if you’re joining two games, but we don’t complain about it; we just have to be ready to play everytime that we play in any other league,” said La Salle head coach Derrick Pumaren.

Karl Kevin Quiambao had 12 markers, a board and two assists, while Michael Phillips finished with seven points, 10 rebounds, and two assists paving the way for La Salle.

Meanwhile, NicCabanero and Sherwin Concepcion paced UST with the former scoring 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists, and the latter with a double-double performance of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Green Archers will next face San Sebastian College – Recoletos on Sunday at 7:00 P.M., Meanwhile, the Growling Tigers will take Far Eastern University earlier in the day at 11:00 A.M at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
