Though he figuredĀ in a grueling double overtime loss when Rain or Shine lost to NLEX on Wednesday evening, Gabe Norwood still had a smile on his face as he left the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
“I just got a message after the game that there is practice tomorrow,” the 32-year-old shared.
Only a few thought that Norwood would once again be donning the colors of Gilas Pilipinas after the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas neededĀ to enlist younger talent to combat the new FIBA format.
But needing to infuse more leadership inĀ the young National Team, coach Chot Reyes and his staff decided to call on the multi-time National Team campaigner. And he gladly heeded the call for the upcoming 2017 FIBA Asia Cup.
“I had a little idea when the original pool was mentioned. But just kinda got a call from Coach Chot to just be ready, if ever. The opportunity came back up so I’m excited for the chance,” recalled Norwood, who last represented the country during the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament. “It’s kind of wild to still be thought of as a valuable asset to the team.
“I’m honored and excited for this go around.”
What excites the two-time PBA champion the most is getting to play with the next generation of players, the cagers that he and the members of the fabled Gilas 2.0 team inspired.
“You got guys that are fresh and getting that opportunity. Being able to watch them during SEABA and at the Jones Cup, the country should be excited,” the 6-foot-6 swingman furthered. “Whether I’m there or not, there’s a lot of guys that are playing with their heart, puso all the way through.
“I’m excited to be a part of it again.”
Moreover, with Gilas being grouped with China in pool play for the Asia Cup, Norwood is looking forward to getting one back against them, especially after the bitter taste that was left from Gilas’ silver finish during the 2015 edition of the tournament.
“We all know the tactics that went on in that host situation,” quipped the two-time FIBA Asia silver medalist.
“But neutral ground [in Lebanon], should be exciting.”
