Embracing Okumu-Padda system starting to pay dividends for Motolite, says Pablo, Carlos

Myla Pablo was the lone double-digit scorer for Motolite in their first three matches in the 2019 PVL Open Conference.

Fortunately, the rest of the Power Builders relieved the two-time PVL Most Valuable Player of some of the scoring burden in Wednesday’s tiff against Philippine Air Force.

The 5-foot-10 outside hitter out of National University, found her groove in the early-goings, setting the tempo for Motolite. Her teammates then followed suit, collaborating for a whipping of the Lady Jet Spikers.

Given the balanced offense from Motolite, head coach Godfrey Okumu expressed his satisfaction with his players’ improvement as a unit.

“I’m happy that the team is improving,” the Kenyan mentor bared. “We are working well together more than the first game we played.

“As you can see, we are improving as time goes by.”

Pablo went on to finish with a game-high 15 points in three sets, all but one coming from attack. But this time, she wasn’t the only one in twin-digit territory.

Tots Carlos also fired from all over the place. She detonated a slew of back-row bombs, netted three kill blocks, and lofted three aces — all that along with eight excellent receptions.

Isa Molde and Ai Gannaban were also instrumental. The former hammered down nine attacks for 10 points laced with 10 excellent digs, while the latter supplied seven markers spiked by two aces.

Motolite playmaker Iris Tolenada generated the offense with 17 excellent sets on top of six points.

Having won all of their last three matches, Pablo emphasized on the importance of sticking to the strategies formulated by Okumu and his coaching partner Air Padda.

“Sila [Okumu and Padda] yung nakakakita sa labas – kung saan ba yung walang tao, doon namin nilalagay. And then kailangan talaga kapag may game plan talaga, kailangan makinig ka. Hindi pwedeng hindi mo pakinggan,” she shared.

Carlos also echoed Pablo’s statement, highlighting on the significance of having a game plan and following it to a tee.

“Well, for me, malaking bagay yung game plan. Kapag sinunod mo yung game plan, sobrang madadalian ka sa loob ng court,” the UP Lady Maroon bared.

“Yun lang, every game, nire-remind kami ni coach na follow the game plan and always be coachable.”
