Nieza Viray keeps San Beda’s semis hope alive after rout of San Sebastian

Nieza Viray steered the San Beda Lady Red Spikers past San Sebastian College-Recoletos Lady Stags, 25-22, 25-16, 25-18, to keep their semis hopes alive in the 2019 PVL Collegiate Conference, Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Red Spikers have remained in pace with Ateneo with a 3-2 card in Pool A. In case the Lady Eagles – who possess a 3-1 record – fall to Perpetual on Sunday, a playoff for a semis spot will ensue on Wednesday.

“Malaking bagay na nanalo [kami] kasi lalo na San Sebastian ‘yung kalaban, NCAA team siya, so pagdating namin sa NCAA, mataas ‘yung morale namin,” San Beda head coach Nemesio Gavino, Jr. said.

“Ngayon kung papalarin kami mag-playoff, tatrabahuhin namin, bibigyan namin ng magandang laban kung sino man makakalaban namin,” he added.

Nieza Viray poured in 13 points built on 11 attacks to go along with nine excellent digs.

Trisha Paras and Ella Viray also carried some of the load on offense, tallying nine markers each. The former netted three of her team’s eight blocks, while the latter hammered down seven attacks.

San Beda captain Cesca Racraquin chipped in seven points, including a booming ace that gave the Lady Red Spikers a 23-17 lead in the third set. She also collected 10 excellent receptions.

Lynne Matias generated the offense for the Lady Red Spikers, dishing out 20 excellent sets. She also had four points, spiked by a pair of service aces.

Meanwhile, the Lady Stags ended their campaign with a 1-4 slate.

San Sebastian were led by Reyann Cañete. She nailed seven attacks and three service aces for 11 points.
