NCAA All-Star games are supposed to be a time when student-athletes get to enjoy a break and a chance for them to play with their on-court rivals.
However, Kent Salado’s third All-Star appearance with Team Heroes was limited to just 17 minutes, as he sprained his left ankle after accidentally stepping on Letran’s JP Calvo in the fourth quarter.
Still, the Cagayan de Oro native’s mood was not dampened, as he enjoyed every minute of the mid-season showcase.
“Kahit talo kami at kahit na-injure ako, nag-enjoy naman ako,” said Salado, who finished the game with eight points, three rebounds, and three assists, after the Heroes absorbed an 84-80 loss to the Saints.
What made this more special for third-year Arellano guard was the intensity with which the student-athletes had played, saying it was reminiscent of his first All-Star game two seasons ago.
“Akala ko nga yung laban petiks lang kasi All-Star pero nagulat kami na seryosohan pala yung laban. Nag-enjoy ako,” the 22-year-old added happily.
But with the one-day affair over, Salado shifts his sight back to leading the Arellano University Chiefs. Despite hurting his ankle, he plans to play it out.
“Kaya ko naman makalaro, pero baka hindi hundred percent kasi masakit. Kung pilitin baka bumigay. Kailangan lang ng babad sa yelo kasi may game na kami sa Thursday. Kalaban JRU,” shared Salado, who is averaging 18.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists for the 3-6 Chiefs.
And with the tournament entering its pivotal stretch, Arellano need Salado more than ever.
