Jayson Miralpez may not have achieved the outcome he hoped for at ONE Friday Fights 85, but the Filipino prospect certainly demonstrated his resilience.
Robson de Oliveira quickly learned that his 20-year-old opponent from Labo, Camarines Norte, was a tough nut to crack in their strawweight MMA bout tonight at the iconic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
De Oliveira charged in with the intention of taking matters to the ground. However, Miralpez showcased solid defensive skills, managing to keep himself off the canvas.
Despite his efforts, the Brazilian’s relentless pursuit put pressure on Miralpez, who resorted to holding the ropes and received a yellow card from the referee.
Eventually, Miralpez was taken down to the mat, where de Oliveira showcased his grappling prowess by achieving full mount and attempting a tight triangle choke that looked to potentially end the match.
Yet Miralpez refused to give in easily, bravely fighting his way out of the submission attempt.
As De Oliveira tried to draw Miralpez back into his wheelhouse, “The Dumagmang Warrior” had to dig deep once again to fend off an armbar this time around.
After enduring De Oliveira’s overwhelming ground game for most of the opening salvo, Miralpez finally seized the opportunity to showcase his striking skills in the second stanza, landing powerful head kicks that caught his ring counterpart off guard.
Unfortunately for Miralpez, de Oliveira managed to take him down once more and sought to finish the fight with another triangle choke.
In true Filipino warrior fashion, Miralpez weathered the storm and found a way to escape, surviving to live another round.
As De Oliveira attempted to pick up where he left off in the final five minutes of action, Miralpez ensured that the Brazilian wouldn’t have an easy path to a decision victory.
In a last-ditch effort to shift the momentum, Miralpez summoned all his strength, even executing a surprising suplex against the seasoned Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.
However, the mat remained De Oliveira’s domain as he outmaneuvered the Filipino and latched on a constricting armbar, holding it until the final bell.
When the scorecards were revealed, it was a formality for De Oliveira, who claimed a unanimous decision victory to improve his professional record to 7-1.
Meanwhile, Miralpez’s gallant stand marked his first career loss against a more experienced foe, leaving him with a 3-1 slate.
