Pau Gasol has been named a Global Ambassador for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
With the tournament set to take place in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia in 200 days, Gasol will bring his extensive experience and expertise to the event.
Joining fellow basketball legend Luis Scola as a Global Ambassador, Gasol is honored to be a part of such a great team of basketball legends.
As a World Cup Global Ambassador, Gasol will bring his knowledge and passion for the game to promote and support the tournament.
“The World Cup is the toughest trophy in basketball to win,” said Gasol.
“A winning team needs character, chemistry, and teammates who will pick you up when you’re down.”
Gasol’s World Cup debut in 2002 was a standout performance, leading Spain to a fifth-place finish and finishing as the tournament’s sixth-leading scorer with an average of 19 points per game.
He reached the pinnacle of his World Cup career in 2006, guiding Spain to victory in Japan and earning MVP honors with his outstanding play of 21.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
In 2014, he captained Spain to six straight wins before a quarter-final upset, earning another spot on the All-Star Five.
In addition to his World Cup appearances, Gasol also competed in five Olympics and seven FIBA EuroBaskets, earning silver medals in 2008 and 2012 and a bronze in 2016.
He is also one of the most decorated players in EuroBasket history, with two MVP awards and multiple All-Star Five selections.
Gasol’s impact on the game extends beyond his playing days, serving as the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 Ambassador and being a member of the International Olympic Committee Athletes’ Commission.
He is now an advisor, investor, and activist in sports and wellness projects.
With Gasol’s impressive track record and passion for the sport, there is no doubt that he will be a valuable asset to the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
