De La Salle University rookie Dani Tanjangco enjoyed a dream start to the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Football Tournament last Saturday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.
The 17-year-old, a product of De La Salle Zobel, made an immediate impact. She scored a goal in the 66th minute to help La Salle secure a 2-0 victory over the University of Santo Tomas.
The goal came off a perfectly timed assist from her senior and national team player Shai del Campo.
It was the ideal way for Tanjangco to launch her collegiate career, and she couldn’t have been prouder of how it all came together.
“Of course, I feel happy. I’m so grateful because I have my coaching staff and my teammates who really pushed me, and my family and friends who supported me all the way,” said Tanjangco, reflecting on her debut performance.
Tanjangco is the latest in a line of standout players from DLSZ to transition from Junior Archer to Lady Booter, following in the footsteps of stars like Shai del Campo, Sara Castañeda, and Bea Delos Reyes.
For Tanjangco, staying with La Salle was about more than just continuing her football journey – it was also about upholding a family legacy.
Her parents, both former booters for La Salle, had also donned the green and white during their time at La Salle.
“Well, my parents came from La Salle, and I also went to La Salle growing up,” she shared.
“You know, it’s really great. I showed La Salle that I always wanted to play and be here. So that’s why I joined.”
Before making her mark in the UAAP, Tanjangco honed her skills in various club environments, playing for teams like Kaya FC and Beach Hut FC.
These experiences broadened her perspective on the game, allowing her to approach her role with a more well-rounded mindset.
Now, her focus is squarely on the Lady Booters and their UAAP campaign, as she strives to improve with each passing day.
“Honestly, the setup is so different,” she said of the transition to collegiate football.
“It was always going to be a lot different because it’s more open, and you know, [it’s nice] to just be here and [keep on] learning every day.”
After a stellar debut, the DLSZ alumna is determined to build on this performance.
With La Salle eager to reclaim the UAAP title it last won in Season 81, Tanjangco’s consistent contributions could be a key factor in their pursuit of the crown.
“I will try my best and fight for my school and support the team,” she said.
