The worst fears of the Thomasians have come true.
It has been confirmed that University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers rookie CJ Cansino has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left leg.
A source closely monitoring the situation confirmed the news.
The injury occurred during UST’s 69-83 loss to the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons last Saturday.
The 6-foot-1 utility guard went for a drive against David Murrell with 5:57 left in the second stanza. However, he landed awkwardly, clutching his left leg as he crumpled on the floor.
Unlike before, when he willed himself back up, Cansino could not muster enough strength to stand. The 19-year-old had to be stretchered to the back and did not return to the game.
He was immediately sent to the hospital for an MRI on the same day.
This is a huge blow to UST’s pre-season campaign, as Cansino will be out at least eight months. The Growling Tigers are planning to play in the 2019 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup.
Cansino ended up with averages of 12.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game this season.
The operation will be headed by the renowned Raul Canlas on Thursday.
