When facing National University’s archrival University of Santo Tomas, Cielo Pagdulagan always makes sure to bring out her A-game.
The National University rookie has always prepared more intensely when UST is on the opposite end of the court—even dating back to her high school days with Nazareth School.
The 19-year-old winger played a pivotal role in the Lady Bulldogs’ 76-70 victory over the Growling Tigresses on Wednesday, completing a sweep of their elimination round head-to-head in the UAAP Season 87 collegiate women’s basketball tournament.
Pagdulagan poured in seven of her 17 points in the fourth quarter while also grabbing six rebounds. She registered a plus-10 in her 24 minutes and 44 seconds on the floor.
“Syempre po kilala naman po natin yung UST so tuwing sila po talaga ang kalaban, parang iba po talaga yung eagerness ko,” said the prized newcomer.
“Parang kailangan pong manalo kami sa game na ito and yung effort ko po dinodoble ko talaga pag sila yung kalaban.”
Even during her high school days with NUNS in the UAAP, Pagdulagan had memorable battles with UST High School.
In their two championships in the UAAP 3×3 High School Girls event, the Lady Bullpups faced the Junior Growling Tigresses in the finals both times.
On each occasion, Pagdulagan delivered standout performances, ultimately earning Most Valuable Player honors.
With Pagdulagan quickly evolving after a slow start in the first round, head coach Aris Dimaunahan couldn’t help but marvel at the talent of his rookie.
“She was huge today and she will always be huge for us, for our campaign. Malaki ang tiwala ng bawat isa sa team namin sa kanya and she is showing na she is ready to take responsibilities this early in her career in the UAAP,” said Dimaunahan.
“That’s a positive sign for her moving forward kasi bago pa lang siya rito pero she’s making an impact in our team.”
