In a display of his growth, Carl Tamayo led the Philippines to a dominant 93-54 victory over Hong Kong, inching closer to a spot in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
With a game-high 16 points, the 23-year-old forward from University of the Philippines was not only thrilled with the win but also eager to credit the man behind his rapid growth – Gilas head coach Tim Cone.
“I’m very blessed to have Tim Cone as my coach sa national team. He’s guiding me [to improve] as a basketball player,” Tamayo said after Gilas’ win.
He also highlighted the advantages of their tight-knit pool, which has been together since the first qualifying window.
“Siyempre, sobrang happy. Malaking bagay na ‘yung mga adjustment hindi ganoong kalaki kasi magkakasama na kami,” shared the Changwon LG import.
Additionally, he spoke about Cone’s supportive mentorship throughout his time with the national team.
Currently, Tamayo is averaging 8.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
“He always talks to me about what I should adjust sa game ko, especially being more mature, more relaxed in the game. That’s a thing na laging sinasabi sa akin, which I’m trying to improve on,” Tamayo explained.
Recalling Tamayo’s three-minute outburst in the second quarter – where he scored nine points to give the Philippines a 16-point advantage – Cone also offered his praise for the young forward.
“That’s what we’re looking for in our young guys, we want to use their total game,” the decorated mentor expressed.
