When asked who he wanted to step for the San Beda Red Lions this season, Robert Bolick did not hesitate with his answer.
“Gusto ko si Calvin [Oftana],” he said.
“Kasi sa posisyon ko kasi, medyo sakop na eh. Nandiyan na si Evan at James, marami na. Yung four-man kasi si Mocon ‘di ba?”
In San Beda’s first three games in the NCAA Season 95 Seniors Basketball Tournament, Canlas and Nelle have been at the forefront of the Red Lions’ attack.
But against one of their rivals in San Sebastian, Oftana stepped up.
“I was telling Calvin na you just have to be patient. There were so many teams that were trying to recruit him pero I told him just to be patient, your time will come. And when that time comes, I’m sure you’ll be ready,” said San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez.
The 6-foot-5 forward posted numbers of 10, points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists to help San Beda pick up a 73-59 win over San Sebastian. Those numbers were reminiscent of lines posted by his contemporaries Art Dela Cruz and Javee Mocon.
“Mahirap. Sobrang mahirap,” said the 23-year-old native of Dumaguete City about filling the shoes left by Mocon.
“Parang dinodoble ko yung effort ko na para mag-improve at para may ipakita naman ako this season.”
Up until today, Mocon – who is a San Beda lifer – has been keeping in touch with Oftana. And Mocon never fails to give him pointers before every game day.
“Sinasabihan nila ako, ‘This is your season. Kailangan mo mag-step up sa team kasi wala nang ibang maglalaro diyan sa quatro’.”
According to Fernandez, Oftana will be pivotal in their bid to win four straight crowns.
“He had ten rebounds, but what’s important is that he had seven assists. He replaced Evan for now because he’s injured but yung offense namin, our system always starts at the four,” shared Fernandez.
“I’m happy with the way he played today, and hopefully maging consistent pa lalo si Calvin.”
