Carlos Yulo clinched three medals, including two titles, on the second and final day of the 2023 Senior Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships, held on Sunday at the OCBC Arena.
The Tokyo Olympian successfully defended his titles on the vault and parallel bars in highly competitive finals, adding to his gold in the floor exercise and silver in the all-around competition.
Yulo, who had won the parallel bars bronze at the 2022 Worlds, managed to retain the title despite challenges from all-around champion Oka Shinnosuke of Japan and China’s Yin Dehang.
The 23-year-old gymnastics star dominated the field with an impressive score of 15.266 points, surpassing Oka’s 15.133 and Yin’s 15.100.
Despite lower D scores of 14.299, Yulo secured the vault gold, narrowly edging out Abdulaziz Mirlaev of Uzbekistan (14.083) and Kim Jaeho of Korea (13.766).
Additionally, Yulo secured a bronze on the high bar with a score of 14.033.
On the women’s side, Filipino-American athletes Aleah Finnegan and Emma Malabuyo contributed two more medals to the country’s overall haul.
Finnegan secured the bronze on the balance beam with a score of 12.833, while Malabuyo achieved a breakthrough Asian Championships medal, earning a silver in the floor exercise with a score of 13.166. Finnegan narrowly missed the podium on the floor, scoring 12.966.
Following the tournament, the Philippines finished in the second position with three golds, two silvers, and three bronzes, trailing behind China’s impressive tally of 8-2-3.
