Student-athletes of College of Saint Benilde and Letran High School got a class of a lifetime on Thursday at the Blazers’ gym in Taft Avenue.
Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Phil Handy held class, not only giving the Blazers and the Squires a workout but also imparting his wealth of knowledge.
“I’m extremely grateful that Coach Phil took the time to be with us. Despite his busy schedule, he found a way to accommodate my team because we have been friends for a while,” said Blazers head coach Tiu.
“We have been discussing his visit for years, and I’m glad he finally had the opportunity to share his knowledge with us. I’ve been eagerly learning from him, even during our meals together.”
“I know the value he brings to the team after attending one of his clinics in Las Vegas a few years ago,” added Squires head coach Allen Ricardo.
“With his experience and understanding of the game, having worked with Kobe [Bryant] and LeBron [James], it is an honor to have him here.”
Besides the players, the coaches of both teams also learned added drills they can incorporate into their programs from the three-time NBA champion coach.
After the session, Will Gozum and the Blazers, along with Andy Gemao and the Squires, gathered around Handy, recounting his playing career.
During the talk, Handy shared how despite not getting drafted to the NBA, he was still able to play the game he loves in numerous countries before eventually landing in the big league as a development coach in 2011.
Later on, a few lucky players were able to talk with the 51-year-old mentor as well.
“I would like to express my gratitude to Boss Frank [Lao] and Boss Jacob for providing this experience to our team,” expressed Ricardo.
“I am very thankful to Boss Frank; our teams are fortunate to have him as our patron,” shared Tiu.
