For the first time, Ateneo High School will have a girls’ volleyball program.
And the school tapped Babes Castillo to be the one who will build it from the ground up while also handling the boys’ team, the school announced on Monday.
Castillo is credited as the architect of the National University Nazareth School program.
“The high school volleyball scene, for me, is where hopes and dreams begin. As a simple teacher, it is always exciting for me,” said Castillo.
“And being given an opportunity to work with our young Ateneo aspiring volleyball leaders brings the excitement level even higher.”
Back in 2010, NUNS tapped Castillo, along with Raf Magno (Conditioning), Aaron Velez (Volleyball Specifics), and Franz Damian (Volleyball Trainer), to create and execute a volleyball program that would turn the school from cellar-dwellers to a powerhouse program.
Under his watch, the school would win four straight UAAP championships while joining the 2018 Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference.
In 2017, Castillo was promoted to the Lady Bulldogs program. His stint there would only last for one season.
He would guide pro team Sta. Lucia before coming back home to Canada.
Now, he is back in doing what he loves — guiding the next generation through his Volleyball Champions Culture Concept.
“However, when the excitement subsides, we are confronted with the real question: how do we begin? Like Rome and other great civilizations that made an impact, I believe that we need to create a solid foundation—a culture that nurtures and encourages growth. One that will allow our young leaders to aspire for excellence, to act with courage, and to embrace challenges with curiosity instead of fear,” he added.
“They need to realize that we are doing all this for a higher cause. I believe this culture thrives in Ateneo.”
