DEFENDING boys champion University of Santo Tomas, National University Nazareth School, and University of the East remain the only unbeaten teams after the second day of the UAAP Season 88 High School Beach Volleyball tournament at Sands SM By The Bay on Saturday.
UST’s JP Bihag and Karl Escobar defeated Adamson University’s Brice Malinao and James Bernabe, 21-15, 21-14, while the NU Bullpups’ Kian Tan and Ethan Jadraque brushed off FEU-Diliman’s Sam Coronel and Kenneth Maliwanag, 21-15, 21-17. The Junior Warriors swept all their matches on Valentine’s Day.
UE’s Mharl Dullete and Emman Marcelino overwhelmed FEU-D’s Maliwanag and Edrielle Manlapaz, 21-7, 21-13, in the morning session. Dullete then teamed up with Cedie Camposano to defeat UP Integrated School’s Marco Bamba and Prince Jimenez, 21-14, 21-15.
De La Salle-Zobel entered the win column as Brett Urriquia and John Karlo Arguelles bested Ateneo’s Xavier Castillo and Ymanuel Cervantes, 21-8, 21-12. Meanwhile, Malinao and Kian Marcial ended the Adamson Baby Falcons’ two-match slide by defeating the Blue Eagles’ Castillo and Antonio Avendano, 21-11, 21-8.
The Junior Green Spikers and the Baby Falcons are now tied with the Fighting Maroons at 1-2.
In the girls division, UST rose to 3-0, but Cheng Dadang and Angelica Del Mar came from a set down to topple Adamson’s Maegan Pineda and Ella Gonzalvo, 21-23, 21-16, 16-14.
Adamson would bounce back after routing Ateneo’s Aislyn Santiago and Dait, 21-5, 21-9.
On the other hand, defending champion NUNS posted its second straight win as Faith Mangyao and Alaiza Candelario defeated FEU-D’s Franz Premaylon and Alexa Amana, 21-16, 21-17.
Pineda and Gonzalvo defeated Mangyao and Candelario, 19-21, 21-14, 15-13, on opening day last Friday.
In other matches, DLSZ’s Aislinn Alemaña and Beatrice Garrido defeated Ateneo’s Atienza and Elena Dait, 21-11, 21-8, while UPIS’ Anya Capus and Niña Abad beat UE’s Janella Mangahis and Fergie Agustin, 21-5, 21-15.
The Lady Bullpups, the Junior Lady Spikers, and the Fighting Maroons are now in a four-way tie with the Baby Falcons from second to fifth place at 2-1.
FEU-D’s Premaylon and Claire Bongo overwhelmed UE’s Mangahis and Agustin, 21-4, 21-7, to finally secure their first win of the season. – TJ
