Atty. Ed Gastanes, former PFF Gen Sec, passes away

One of the key figures behind the rise of Philippine football, Atty. Edwin “Ed” B. Gastañes, passed away on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024.

He was 66 years old.

Born on December 21, 1958, Gastañes was a dedicated leader in the world of sports administration. He served as the General Secretary of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) from February 13, 2013, to September 30, 2023, during a transformative period under the presidency of Mariano V. Araneta.

His leadership left an indelible mark on the sport in the country.

During his tenure, Philippine football reached remarkable milestones, including the Philippine Men’s National Team’s historic debut in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup and the Philippine Women’s National Team’s inspiring entry into the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Gastañes also played a pivotal role in establishing and operationalizing key domestic competitions such as the Philippines Football League, Copa Paulino Alcantara, PFF Women’s League, PFF U19 Boys National Championship, and the PFF eTrophy.

The PFF mourned the loss of its former leader, emphasizing his enduring contributions to the sport.

“We are grateful for his efforts that made a lasting impact on Philippine football,” read the PFF’s official statement. “His legacy will forever be remembered in the hearts of those who had the privilege of working alongside him. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched through his service to football. Rest in peace, Atty. Gastañes.

“Your contributions will never be forgotten.”

Beyond the PFF, Gastañes also held other significant roles in sports administration.
