Asiabasket: FEU depth too much for Letran, sweeps pool


Far Eastern University completed its sweep of the Bola.TV AsiaBasket Las Piñas Championship’s Group B after defeating Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 84-74, on Wednesday at the Villar Coliseum in Las Piñas City.

With the win, the Tamaraws will head to the knockout crossover quarterfinals against another NCAA squad, College of Saint Benilde (1-3), on Thursday.

Five players scored in double digits for the Tamaraws, with Cholo Anonuevo leading the FEU offense with 14 points.

Xyrus Torres registered 13 points, five rebounds, and five steals, while Royce Alforque and James Tempra contributed 12 markers and seven boards each. Patrick Sleat added 10 points for FEU, who led by as much as 17.

Kurt Reyson led the scoring for the Knights with 20 points but shot four-of-19 from the field (21%) and three-of-15 (20%) from beyond the arc.

Kevin Santos recorded a double-double for Letran, with 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Pao Javillonar tallied 14 markers.

The Knights will take on Corsa Tires (2-2) in the playoffs.

Corsa earned the second seed in Pool A after outlasting Uratex, 76-73.

Justine Sanchez led the way for Corsa, delivering an all-around performance with 17 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists, while Gerald Anderson led the scoring with 18 markers and six boards.

Tony Ynot and Hommer Macatangay both added 10 points for Corsa.

Uratex (2-2), meanwhile, will face Sanzar Pharmaceuticals (2-2), while Ateneo de Manila University (4-0) squares off against San Beda University (1-3) in the other matchups.

Benilde will carry the momentum it gained into the playoffs after eliminating University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (1-3) with an 83-71 victory.

Coming off an off-night in their previous game, where he only scored three points, Migs Oczon became the man for the Blazers in this game, unloading 23 points on six-of-11 (47%) shooting with six assists to lead their offense.

Miggy Corteza dropped a double-double, with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Mark Sangco added 10 markers for Benilde.

The same could not be said for Sansar, who suffered a 72-75 loss to also-ran Pilipinas Aguilas (1-3).

Eugene Toba registered a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Edrian Ramirez led the offense for the Aguilas with 23 points.

Uratex Import Ola Adeogun led the Sleep Specialists with a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 17 rebounds, but it was not enough to beat the hard-fighting Corsa.

Cyrus Nitura posted a triple-double for the Altas with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists.

Adeshokan Odou and Salomon Kone scored 30 points and 14 rebounds, and 11 markers and 22 boards, respectively, for the Fire Tigers. (Jose Gabriel Ignacio)
