For just the second time in her young career, Alex Eala has advanced to the second round of a Grand Slam singles event—and she did so in dominant fashion.
The 21-year-old Filipina lived up to her No. 29 seeding, giving World No. 75 Renata Zarazua of Mexico little opportunity to mount a serious challenge in a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory on Wednesday morning (Manila time) in the opening round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.
The win also served as redemption for Eala, who lost to Zarazua, then the World No. 105, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the ITF W100 Cary Tennis Classic in North Carolina in 2024.
Two years later, Eala showed just how much her game had evolved.
After the opening set was tied at 1-1, Eala reeled off five of the next six games, using her power and court coverage to overwhelm the 5-foot-3 Zarazua. The 5-foot-9 Eala dictated the rallies from the baseline and repeatedly forced the Mexican to chase balls all over the court.
Zarazua mounted her biggest resistance while serving in the sixth game, erasing a 0-40 deficit and forcing seven deuces. But Eala eventually converted the break before comfortably holding serve in the next game to take the opening set.
The two players were familiar with each other’s games, having partnered in the women’s doubles event at the 2025 French Open, where they reached the second round. Eala made full use of that familiarity, continuing to frustrate Zarazua with her aggressive shot-making and well-timed winners in the second set.
The Filipina broke serve immediately in the opening game before holding to take a 2-0 lead. Zarazua, who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 51 two years ago, held serve in the third game to get on the scoreboard, but it proved to be her only game of the set.
Eala closed out the match in just one hour and 19 minutes on Court 12 of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, winning four of the final five games to secure her place in the Round of 64.
In her six Grand Slam main-draw appearances over the past two years, this marks only the second time Eala has advanced beyond the opening round. Her previous breakthrough came at the 2025 US Open, where she stunned then World No. 15 Clara Tauson of Denmark in three sets.
Eala will next face the winner of the first-round match between returning American legend Serena Williams and Australia’s Maya Joint.
