Opportunity knocked, and the 11-time UAAP softball champion Adamson University answered the call.
The Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL) reached out to the dynastic Lady Falcons, inviting them to represent the Philippines in the Asian Universities Women’s Softball Asia Cup, being the reigning champions of the UAAP for 11 consecutive seasons.
Naturally, Adamson embraced the opportunity to represent the country, as they prepare to face six other nations in this international tournament sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC).
The Lady Falcons, led by head coach Ana Santiago—who also manages the RP Blu Girls—flew to Taiwan on Monday morning for the tournament, which will run from October 15 to 19.
Adamson will compete against teams from powerhouse nations such as Japan and Taiwan, along with South Korea, India, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
“We are really excited, because first time na ang Adamson University ay ipapadala kami sa isang international tournament with the best Asian universities and I think first time din sasali ang Pilipinas,” said Santiago.
The team will be spearheaded by Season 86 MVP Angelu Gabriel and Finals MVP April Minanga, alongside seasoned pitcher Glory Alonzo.
Rounding out the 16-player squad are Remilie Herrero, Mae Langga, MJ Libaton, MJ Maguad, Ne Mahinay, Jeelyn Pajotal, Alaiza Talisik, Reyae Villamin, Roma Cruz, Chastene Jover, Victoria Magbanua, Jane Marie Sigue, and Mea Tubongbanua.
Part of Santiago’s coaching staff are Shierylou Valenzuela and Rizza Bernardino, while Adamson Director for Athletic Development Fr. Aldrin Suan, CM, will serve as the Head of Delegation.
This international exposure will aid Adamson’s preparation for their 12-peat bid in next year’s UAAP Season 87 Softball Tournament.
More importantly, it will also benefit the Philippines, as the tournament will award ranking points that contribute to the country’s standing in the world rankings.
The Philippines is currently ranked 18th globally.
“Malaking tulong siya para maiprepare ang new team namin sa UAAP kasi nabawasan kami ng mga players na naglaro last year,” added Santiago.
“For sure marami kaming matutunan dito especially nandito ang powerhouse ng Asia like Japan, Taiwan, Korea, at iba pa.”
Adamson-Philippines will kick off their campaign on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. against Japan.
The Lady Falcons received support from the Adamson Alumni Association, Metro Sronerich Corporation, and Cebuana Lhuillier.
