Sara DeBeer traveled thousands of miles from Louisville, Kentucky, to be with her daughter, Anna — hoping to bring a little piece of home and comfort as the young import navigates her first-ever overseas stint.
The elder DeBeer arrived in the Philippines earlier this week and immediately witnessed a special moment.
On Thursday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre, she watched her 24-year-old daughter lead ZUS Coffee to a commanding four-set victory over Creamline in the 2025 Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference.
“So, I just wanted to bring a few refreshments and a little bit of the USA here to the Philippines for her midway through this trip until she gets home,” Sara shared with a smile. “But more importantly, I wanted to share this experience with her — to support her and her team.”
Clearly, it was a night to remember for both mother and daughter.
“Oh wow, I’m just so excited,” Sara continued. “This team is just fun to watch. They play so well together — great hustle, great defense, and just such a team effort. I know Anna loves playing with them and learning from this new environment. It’s been so much fun to see.”
For Anna, having her mother in the stands made all the difference.
The University of Louisville alum turned in an inspired performance, firing 37 points built on 35 attacks and two kill blocks, along with 15 excellent receptions. Her heroics powered the Thunderbelles to a 3-0 record in Pool B — and matched her personal high in the PVL.
“She’s the best,” Anna said with a bright smile after the match. “She travels a lot and always finds a way to come out and support me, no matter where I play. Having her here for a few games is so special — she’ll be around for the next few weeks, which is really exciting.
“Just having her here feels like a little piece of home away from home,” she added.
For Sara, making the long trip was never a question — it was a mother’s instinct to be there for her daughter as she takes bold steps in her volleyball journey.
“Oh wow, this is just something she really wanted to do — to experience life outside the United States and play internationally,” Sara said proudly. “I’m so proud of her for taking on this adventure, for learning and growing, getting her reps in, and playing with new teammates. It’s been such a great experience for her.”
Sara will remain in the Philippines for the next few weeks, offering her daughter both comfort and motivation as Anna continues to make her mark in the country’s top volleyball league.
