Jasmine Althea Ramilo captured a much-anticipated SEA Games gold in rhythmic gymnastics after a stellar performance in the individual all-around on Monday at Thammasat University Rangsit Campus in Pathum Thani, Thailand.
The 17-year-old sensation scored 102.180 points to claim the title, following in the footsteps of Breanna Labadan, who took bronze in the 31st edition — the last time the discipline was contested.
“These (championships) were great. They were organized really well, and I’m so grateful to be representing my own country, the Philippines,” said Ramilo.
The Italy-based gymnast faced difficulties in two apparatus but eventually summoned the determination to medal, proving that her Asian Championships bronze in the clubs — the country’s first-ever in the competition — was no fluke.
“At first, I wasn’t … because they put me in the wrong song of the hoop. But then I tried to do my best, but it wasn’t my best hoop. So I was a bit scared I couldn’t get the medal,” Ramilo shared.
“And also in the final of the ribbon, I was a bit scared. But now, I’m happy that I finally got my medal,” she added.
Singapore’s Mikayla Angeline Yang claimed silver with 101.490 points, while 2021 silver medalist Joe Ee Ng of Malaysia and Thailand’s Piyada Peeramatukorn shared the bronze with identical scores of 96.890.
