The man who scored the most points in recorded UAAP history

After Alvin Pasaol’s 49-point outing for the University of the East against the De La Salle University Green Archers last Wednesday, many wondered who had actually scored the most points in UAAP history.

Jeff Napa had towed the National University to a 98-92 win over Adamson back in August 22, 2002, with 43 points, spiked by a record-tying 10 triples. This was the last 40-point game in the league before Pasaol’s outing.

UP also produced a player in the ultra-exclusive 40-point club in Paolo Mendoza. He scored 48 points back in the 62nd season of the league.

PBA legends Allan Caidic and Pido Jarencio also figured in an epic shootout back in October 5, 1984 according to Jonas Terrado of the Manila Bulletin.

UE’s Caidic, known as the Triggerman, fired 46 points; while UST’s Jarencio, the Fireman, scored 48 points in Game Three of the UAAP Season 47 Finals, which the Red Warriors won, 112-99.

Moreover, according to fampeople.com, Caidic, who co-shares the most three-pointers made record in league history, scored 42 points in Game One of that same series.

The one topping the list, though, is the only member of the UAAP’s 50-point club.

Former Glowing Goldie Ed Cordero scored a whopping 54 points during UST’s 95-89 win over Adamson back in July 29, 1979. The game happened at the Loyola Center (now known as the Blue Eagle Gym) in Quezon City.

Cordero, who stands at 6-foot-4, scored 30 points in the second half of that game.

According to the UAAP’s current lead statistician Pong Ducanes, this is the most points scored in recorded UAAP history.

And Thursday afternoon, prior to Mapua’s 76-71 win over the Perpetual, Cordero — now an assistant coach to the Cardinals — shared to Ducanes the memories of the feat he achieved that has withstood the test of time.
