Perpetual files protest to overturn decision to forfeit opening day game

The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Altas have filed a protest regarding the decision of the NCAA forfeiting their 69-65 win over the College of Saint Benilde Blazers last Tuesday due to their wearing the wrong color uniform.

In a protest sent last Wednesday, the Las Piñas-based school was seeking to uphold the Altas’ victory over the Blazers and questioned why they were penalized twice, the first by awarding a technical free throw to Saint Benilde to start the game and then overturning their win a few hours later.

NCAA Management Committee chairman Fr. Glynn Ortega, OAR, of hosts San Sebastian said they are currently tackling the issue.

“We’re still deliberating on it today,” said Ortega.

The forfeiture came after the Altas wore their dark maroon uniform instead of the designated white jersey.

Perpetual Help were  surprised by why commissioner Arturo “Bai” Cristobal and the ManCom allowed the game to push through when they could have decided to just default the game.

A source privy to Perpetual Help said the school admitted its fault of not getting their white uniform on time and would have readily accepted a decision from Cristobal and the ManCom if they had decided to default the game in favor of Saint Benilde.

Instead, the game pushed through resulting in the forfeiture.

Saint Benilde coach TY Tang agreed that the game shouldn’t have tipped-off to begin with.

“For me, the game should have been over before it started,” said the youthful mentor moments after the game.
