The University of Santo Tomas Lady Shuttlers finished stronger than the Lady Falcons after overthrowing them with the score of 3-2. The event took place last Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
Starting the battle, UST team captain Steffie Aquino cursorily defeated Christine Garin of Adamson, 21-14, 21-12. Aquino made quick work of both games, occasionally fending off the challenge of the Adamson senior. Nonetheless, the end-game composure of the lanky Tomasina prevailed to clinch the match.
Airish Macalino continued to defend the Tigresses’ lead after beating AdU’s Clydel Pada, despite the slow start in the first game. Macalino still got the second singles match, 14-21, 21-14, 21-10.
In the first doubles, Kristine Gaspar and Elizabeth Pimentel fell short after succumbing to Adamson’s duo, Pada and Mika Aquino, 15-21, 20-22. Pada took charge this time to prevent a personal shutout. Aquino followed her partner’s lead as they averted a second-game meltdown to win the match.
Nonetheless, Macalino and Aquino finished the tie off with a two-game win over Garin and Alyssa San Pedro, 21-14, 21-19. The Adamsonians made a strong stand in the second game once again, but errors in the crucial stages doomed them to a defeat at the hands of UST. Aquino sent the shuttle to the endline, to which neither San Pedro nor Garin could get, to win the tie.
Aquino closed out the tie on a good note for Adamson as she took the third singles match. Gaspar retired due to injury.
On September 28, Wednesday at 1pm, the Tigresses (2-3) will face the Far Eastern University Tamaraws (3-2). While, the Adamson Lady Falcons (1-4) will battle against the joint third-placers, the Ateneo Lady Shuttlers (3-2).
