Sargent a game-changer says Ayo

Ever since his days with the Letran Knights, defense has always been the name of the game for head coach Aldin Ayo. During Letran’s magical NCAA Season 91 campaign, the Knights forced a league-high 27 turnovers a game that helped introduce the nation to the “mayhem” defense of Ayo.

The 38 year old mentor always praised now-Letran senior McJour Luib back then. On paper, Luib’s averages won’t amaze anyone. But the Cagayan de Oro-native’s effort on the defensive end was what made Luib one of the most important players during Letran’s campaign.IMG_4012-NCAA-Letran-vs.-San-Sebastian-Luib-1 Sargent a game-changer says Ayo Basketball DLSU News UAAP - philippine sports news

“Si Mcjour, malaking factor sa amin. He’s the closer. Pagdating sa endgame, ‘di yan nagkakamali ng desisyon,” Ayo told ABS-CBN Sports a year ago.

Luib was the ultimate glue guy that made Ayo’s House of Chaos work.

Last summer, the De La Salle University Green Archers were able to bring back 6’3 Filipino-American Julian Sargent, who was already eligible to enter the PBA Draft. The second overall pick in the 2015 PBA D-League draft with his long reach fascinated Ayo.

The 24 year old winger has always guarded the key scorers of the opposing team but was plagued with nagging injuries in his two seasons in Taft Avenue. On his best days, he was able to shut down the best scorers of the league. Sargent under Ayo’s mayhem defense was a match made in heaven.

“We don’t rely on our offense. During the third quarter pinasok ko ‘yung mga second-stringers,” Ayo shared after La Salle’s romping of UP that started in the third quarter.

“They didn’t do anything special. They just played defense.”

Sargent played only eight minutes during that game but constantly terrorized the floor generals of the Maroons that helped halt any play UP was pushing for.

“I can say Julian is a game changer for us.”

“Ganun naman talaga ang sistema namin. We don’t rely on our offense,” Ayo closed. “Every time we come up with good defense, it produces lots of points for us. That’s why we had 34 points [in the third quarter].”
