Lady Eagles smite hapless Tigresses to keep semis hopes alive

The Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles evened their quarterfinals record at 2-2 after staving off the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses in straight sets 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 in the Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Aside from the first set, the Lady Eagles had no trouble sweeping the erring, depleted Tigresses. Ateneo took their largest lead, 22-15, in the third set to finish off the match.

“Siguro we just focused on the preparation for this match so that we could execute when it came time for the game. I thought we really played well as a team and we’re happy we got the win,” said Ateneo open hitter Kim Gequillana who was named Player of the Game with 13 points.

Ana Gopico also added 13 points for the Loyola-based spikers while Michelle Morente added 10 markers, nine digs, and six excellent receptions.

Ateneo’s win kept them in pace with other 2-2 teams UP and San Sebastian for one of the remaining semifinals seats.

UST Juniors standout Ejiya Laure led the Tigresses anew with 13 points, the only Tigress in double-digits. Caitlyn Viray added eight markers.
