UST locks in Reg Jurado for fifth year

Much like how last year, Detdet Pepito did not need even a week of pondering to announce her return for one last run with the University of Santo Tomas, Reg Jurado is showing that same unwavering resolve.

The homegrown opposite spiker from Cebu has officially committed to play her fifth and final playing year with the Golden Tigresses in the UAAP Season 89 Collegiate Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

UST Institute of Physical Education and Athletics director and UAAP Season 88 chairman Fr. Rodel Cansancio, O.P., announced the development on Thursday evening.

“I can confirm that Reg will be staying for one more year. We’re grateful for her decision – her leadership is a big win for UST and the team,” Fr. Cansancio told Tiebreaker Times.

Jurado’s decision to exhaust her final playing year for the Shaq Delos Santos-mentored squad comes on the heels of the Golden Tigresses’ bronze-medal finish in the UAAP Season 88 Collegiate Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

The 21-year-old opposite spiker enjoyed her best season in the UAAP women’s volleyball division, finishing as the sixth-best scorer with 225 points built on 198 attacks, 19 blocks, and eight aces.

She also emerged as the sixth-best spiker with a 35.61-percent attack clip, while finishing sixth in digs with 2.38 excellent digs per set.

Beyond her statistical impact, Jurado’s decision to return gives UST a steady leader to help fill the void left by Pepito — the program’s team captain for the past three seasons.

Jurado will lead UST alongside Cassie Carballo, Angge Poyos, and the middle blocker tandem of Lianne Penuliar and Avril Bron.
